HPV vaccination 19- to 26-year-olds

The HPV vaccination can protect you against 6 types of cancer. Eight out of ten people come into contact with HPV. Fortunately, it doesn't always make you sick. Usually, your body clears the virus on its own. But in 10 to 20% of the cases this doesn’t happen.

In January 2023 a vaccination campaign against HPV was started. The campaign is for men and women born between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2003. On this page you can read all about the HPV 18+ campaign in South Limburg.

Who can get vaccinated?

Who can get vaccinated?

Young people born between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2003 received an invitation for HPV vaccination. This includes men who have not been invited before and women who have had no or only 1 HPV vaccination. This group will have the opportunity to be vaccinated at no cost during this catch-up campaign in 2023. Did you not receive an invitation, but do you belong to the target group? Then contact the HPV information line Zuid-Limburg (088 880 5078).

Other age groups

Children under 18 get vaccinated through the RIVM's annual National Vaccination Program. They are not covered by this catch-up campaign. This is because the HPV vaccine works best when you have not yet been infected with the virus. Therefore, as from 2022, girls and boys will receive an invitation for the vaccination in the year that they turn 10. Chances are they will not yet be infected by then.

This campaign also doesn’t apply to you if you are 27 or older. But you can make an appointment with your general practitioner. You will have to pay for this vaccination yourself.

What is HPV?

What is HPV?

HPV is the abbreviation for human papillomavirus. This is a virus that can cause several types of cancer. Cervical cancer is the most common. There are many different HPV types, but types 16 and 18 most often lead to cancer. The HPV vaccine we use in the Netherlands protects against these 2 types of HPV.

How do you get HPV?

How do you get HPV?

HPV is highly contagious and very common. The virus is transmitted through the hands, skin, or mouth when you have sex with someone who is infected.  The person you are with can carry the virus without knowing it. And then you can get infected too.

We estimate that yearly 1,100 women and 400 men get cancer from HPV. The HPV vaccine protects you against cervical, oral, pharyngeal, vaginal, vulva, anus and penile cancers. If you get vaccinated, you protect yourself and others from HPV. A vaccination doesn't mean that you are 100% protected, but it gives you a much lower chance of getting cancer from HPV. To be protected you need 2 vaccinations that are at least 5 months apart.
